adaptive horse riding lessons student getting assistance sitting on his horse for the Promise Landing Farm Showcase

FAQs

  • What happens during the lessons?
Our inclusive riding program is dedicated to teaching horsemanship and riding skills that promote independence, intellectual engagement, and physical strength to individuals with disabilities. Our lesson plans are adapted to fit each individual’s unique goals and needs. Riding skills begin with the basics and follow a specific and sensible progression to create balanced and well rounded riders. Every lesson is taught with an emphasis on communication, task analysis, specific praise, and lots of how’s and why’s to ensure understanding and to build upon cognitive skills. With these criteria in mind, lesson plans are designed weekly with a focus around one or two riding skills and will include games and activities to reinforce the skill, as well as opportunities for social interaction among riders.
  • How does the program scheduling work?
Our lesson program runs year-round, in sessions arranged by season. Participants come at the same day and time weekly throughout the course of a session. We offer lessons in 60 minute time blocks designed to accommodate each person’s goals on and off the horse. Both small group and private lessons are available. As part of the intake process, we work with each individual to decide what format and scheduling will best accommodate their needs and goals.
  • What kind of accommodations are provided for riders?
We will adapt our program to best fit your needs and keep you safe while providing an environment in which you can learn and grow. There are both riding and ground based activities offered at Promise Landing. We are working towards full ADA compliance throughout our facility. Currently we have a ramp in our indoor arena for mounting, along with a large mounting platform adjacent to our outdoor arena. We do not have a hydraulic lift.
  • How do I get started?
First, you'll fill out and submit the Participant Application. After we have reveived it, one of our staff will reach out to schedule an evaluation. At the evaluation, we will give you a tour of our facility, let you meet some of our horses, and give you a warm PLF welcome. You will be evaluated by a certified PATH instructor to determine your eligibility, goals, and needs.
  • What should I wear to my lesson?
Riders should wear long comfortable pants: jeans, leggings, sweatpants, or riding breeches are all acceptable options. Pants should not be so tight that they restrict the rider’s movement. They should also wear closed-toe (preferably hard soled) shoes with a heel. Participants are encouraged to purchase their own ATSM/SEI certified helmet. Our team will help with helmet questions as part of the intake process.
